Substance Misuse

Course overview

This course is designed to enable the learner to recognise the effects of alcohol abuse, be able to identify different types of drugs and the effects of drug abuse, the impact drug and alcohol abuse would have on a young person and how to support a young person with addiction and misuse. It highlights the negative impacts of stigma and how we can avoid it.

Aims and objectives

• Explain your role in raising awareness of the dangers of substance misuse
• Explain the effects of substance misuse on Children and Vulnerable People
• Recognise when a someone is using substances and use ways to discuss addiction
• Highlight how users suffer from stigma
• Explain what action to take in emergency and non-emergency situations, including Mental Health and Substance Disorder First Aid Techniques
• Describe/ demonstrate how to talk to people about substances
